The ‘luxury’ of a stay at home mom

The ‘luxury’ of a stay at home mom

The luxury of a stay at home mom. There is a general assumption that a stay at home mum means you are living the ‘luxury’ life and your days are easy.

I was quite angry when a sarcastic comment was thrown my way: ‘Well you have sat on your bum for how long?…you are certainly living the luxury life’! I quickly (maybe quite rudely) put them back in their place.

When I think of a luxury life, I think of shopping on a daily basis, getting my nails done every week, heading out for brunches everyday, dining out everyday, endless designer bag addiction,  I could go on. My life resembles nothing of the sort. Would you call moping up spilt milk, cleaning the floor knowing that you will be doing it again at the next meal time, wiping snotty noses and endless laundry duties living the luxury life? I hardly think so. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my little one and being at home means I spend this valuable and precise time with him and watch him grow, but I cannot think of one thing that makes  a stay at home mum’s job a luxury.

I will finish with my list of what I consider the ‘mother luxuries’:

1-Having a proper bath and I mean a good old foamy soak, where I can relax for a good half an hour or so.

2-Having a lie in without having someone shouting  ‘mummy, mummy’ over you and jumping into your bed at 7am. I haven’t had a lie in for about 3 years now.

3-Having to pee without an audience.

4-Leaving the house with a small bag and not having to carry on the go snacks for the outings.

5-Drinking my latte whilst it is still hot, or not having to gulp it down so fast to get out of the house in time.

6-Having a normal telephone conversation with a friend without being interrupted with screams and phone snatching.

7-Having time to do my nails properly using a base and top coat rather than a quick messy two coat colour look.

8-Browsing the shops without having to run around a toddler or having to leave the shop because of an embarrassing toddler meltdown.

9-Be able to use my labtop in peace without someone pressing down on my keyboard with his sticky fingers.

10-To be able to go out during the day in heels for a lunch date rather than wearing flats because it will make the run around much easier on my feet.

A stay at home mum is no luxury. A big shout out to all those stay at home mums who are doing the hardest job in the world.
