Coming from such a mixed background myself, it should come as no surprise to you guys that I love to travel and experience new cultures. I thought I would put together my top places to travel for those travel bugs that are thinking of booking of somewhere to go this Summer.
I love being able to experience a taste of different cultures first-hand, which is why I thought I’d put together this brief bucket list for culture vultures. These are just a few of the places I have been to and some I’m hoping to go to in the near future – happy travels!
Bucket list for cultural vultures:
There are so many places in the world that are steeped in history, but Rome is one of the cities that top them all. Everywhere you turn there is a towering monument with intricately carved figurines, ancient ruin of theaters long forgotten, and relics and artifacts packed into the various museums.
Of course, the great thing about Rome is that it’s bursting with modern culture too, so you’ll never be bored with so much to do. The local street markets are a must see from their collection of various food to cute little leather gems. Or why not dine on authentic Italian cuisine before heading out for an opera? Be sure to book in advance though using romeoperatickets.com, as there are many others out there who want to get in on the action.
The Trevi fountain is a must see both during the day (for good pictures) and night (looks amazing with the lights).
And saving the best till last: It is the land of ICE-CREAM heaven. Nowhere does it best.
Havana is one of the most unique cities in the world, as it seems to be permanently stuck in a time warp. While many other cultural destinations have evolved around their roots, Havana seems perfectly happy to preserve them for as long as possible. If you take a walk into the beautiful Old Town, you’ll be treated to colourful buildings, vintage cars and a Cuban beat to dance to until dawn.
When I get the chance to head out there, I’ll be heading straight for Plaza de la Cathedral which is home to the iconic Cathedral of San Cristobal. I’m also an art lover, so if you’re like me, you’ll want to take a trip to the Cubano Fine Art Museum.
This is definitely one place I have been dying to see for years. I have no idea why I am missing this stamp in my passport still!
As they were one of the most accomplished societies in history, it’s no surprise that the ancient Greeks left behind a lot of treasures for us to marvel over. I hear the night life here is superb, especially in the Summer with all the open air bars and roof top cafes.
You’ll definitely want to take some photographs at the Acropolis. This majestic, hill-top citadel is home to several ancient buildings, including the famous Parthenon, a former temple to the goddess Athena, and one of the most stunning pieces of architecture in the world. If you love your archaeology too, you’ll find plenty of findings from the original digging site over at the Acropolis Museum.
